90s Creepy Crawlers Toy Is Becoming A Movie
Adaptations remain all the rage in Hollywood these days, as studios continue to scoop up properties for the silver screen treatment. These properties range from classic cartoons to comic books, and they have a tendency to come in all shapes and sizes. That seems particularly fitting for one of the latest toy adaptations now in development, as a film adaptation of the Creepy Crawlers brand is now officially in the works.
Per a report from Variety, Paramount has acquired the rights to produce a feature film based on the Creepy Crawlers brand. Few actual plot details are available at this time, but the film will focus on the toy brand from the 1960s that returned to prominence in the 1990s by allowing children to make their own bizarre creatures using molds. Behind the scenes, the project is being produced by the Fast and Furious franchise's Neal H. Moritz, as well as Marc Gurvitz and Toby Ascher, and Stephen Berman will executive produce.
This is far from Paramount's first foray into the world of toy adaptations in the film world. The studio has already seen success with properties like Transformers and G.I. Joe, as both franchises take ample inspiration from beloved toy brands. Having said that, Creepy Crawlers arguably comes with a less built-in plot or conceptual framework, so it will undoubtedly prove interesting to see how the studio chooses to approach this project from a narrative perspective.
Of course, there is a template to look at from another studio. Specifically, Warner Bros. has seen success adapting the LEGO property into a series of standalone films ever since the debut of The LEGO Movie back in 2014. Like Creepy Crawlers, LEGO doesn't inherently come with its own plot or narrative thread to adapt, so the folks at Paramount could take a cue by similarly placing emphasis on creativity and individualism.
The decision to move forward with an adaptation of the Creepy Crawlers brand actually makes quite a bit of sense when we look at other recent adaptations of a similar ilk. It's no secret that 1990s nostalgia is arguably at an all-time high right now, with films like Goosebumps and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle generating some fairly significant success over the last couple of years. With something as beloved as Creepy Crawlers coming to the silver screen soon, there is plenty of reason to assume that this project could very well do the same when it is released.
