While it was released three months ago, fans have still not stopped reeling from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson's subversive sequel shattered fan expectations, and expanded the galaxy far, far away in challenging ways. More information about Johnson's process in crafting the sequel have been released over the past few weeks, especially as The Last Jedi arrived on demand. The director's commentary has been enlightening, and helps to explain some of the more divisive parts of the movie. Johnson recently discussed Rey and Kylo Ren's connection, revealing that the scene in which they touched hands was about as sexy as the franchise is going to get. He said,
The ultimate expression of that is focusing [the shot] even tighter when there's contact. To me, one of my favorite shots of the movie is those two fingers touching. It's the closest thing we'll get to a sex scene in a Star Wars movie.
It looks like we shouldn't expect for any space sex in Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars trilogy. While the franchise has had some epic love stories, it's never really about the physical connection. Indeed, it's this lack of contact that makes Kylo and Rey's big scene so powerful in The Last Jedi.
The bond between the two new Star Wars characters was a fascinating aspect of the latest sequel. It's a type of Force Power that we haven't seen, and it was interesting to watch them match wits and eventually find some common ground. Rey truly wants to bring Kylo back to the Light Side of The Force, while Adam Driver's character attempted to rule the First Order alongside the up and coming Jedi.
Rian Johnson's comments from SXSW (via Business Insider) did seem to ignore the prequel trilogy, which featured quite a few romantic scenes between Padme and Anakin. The future Dark Lord seduces Padme on Naboo, albeit with some awkward dialogue. Who can forget the infamous sand scene from Attack of the Clones?
While way less powerful than Rey and Kylo's scenes, you can't deny that that's arguably closer to a sex scene. It's the secret marriage and physical manifestation of their love that eventually results in the birth of Leia and Luke.
