Will Commissioner Gordon Return To The DCEU? Here's What J.K. Simmons Says

Batman was an ensemble player in Justice League, but there were still a few opportunities to highlight the Caped Crusader's mythology in the movie. Along with bringing back Bruce Wayne's trusty butler/confidant, Alfred Pennyworth, Justice League also included Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon to the DC Extended Universe, played by J.K. Simmons. For those who are wondering whether we'll ever see Simmons' Gordon again, the actor said there are currently no plans for him to return, though he is open to reprising the character. In Simmons' words:

Nothing has changed. There are conversations going on, that I'm not going to make public. As far as I know, there's no opportunity, in the immediate future, for me to do more Commissioner Gordon, but I continue to be optimistic that it will happen again.

The future of the DCEU looks a lot different than it did when the initial slate of movies was announced in late 2014, especially given how Justice League commercially underperformed last year. While Matt Reeves' The Batman, the likeliest next place for Commissioner Gordon to pop up, remains in development, it still doesn't have a release date attached. J.K. Simmons is clearly privy to things being discussed in secret over at Warner Bros and DC, though he won't share those with the public. Still, while nothing is in the works currently for Simmons to don the mustache and trench coat again, as he told Collider, filling Gordon's shoes again hasn't been ruled out entirely.

In Justice League, Commissioner Gordon first interacted with Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Cyborg atop the GCPD rooftop (home of the world-famous Bat-Signal), where he passed along intel about people from or near S.T.A.R. Labs being abducted by alien perpetrators. He later returned after the League's first battle with Steppenwolf, commenting that they caused millions in damages, but he liked seeing Batman "playing well with others again." Gordon's screen time was minimal, but at least it had established that he and the Dark Knight still have a good rapport going.

Obviously it would be great for James Gordon to have a role in The Batman, but there's still a lot we don't know about that project, chiefly whether it will see Ben Affleck donning the cape and cowl again or if the rumors are true and a younger actor will play Batman instead. If it's the latter, then one would imagine that a younger actor would be needed to play Gordon as well, since in modern depictions of Baman's history, Gordon is a ways off from becoming commissioner.

While it might be too late to pull this off since it's beginning filming soon, I would recommend Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (yes, that's really the title) include James Gordon. With the movie taking place in Gotham City and Batman reportedly MIA, it might be nice to have a familiar face around. Besides, if Harley Quinn, Huntress and Black Canary are causing a ruckus fighting Black Mask, you would imagine that the city's police commissioner would eventually hear about it and get the police force involved.

7 Jumbo Dumbo Facts You May Not Know About Disney's Animated Original

Now that Dumbo is coming back into our lives, nostalgic folks may seek out the original for a family movie night, or just to relive the nostalgia of one of Disney's most magical tales. While the film itself is interesting, however, there's a lot about it in general that make it so much more than an animated movie. Check out some of these jumbo Dumbo facts below, which will certainly give you a greater appreciation for this Walt Disney classic.

Dumbo Is Only 64 Minutes LongThe first thing those who jump back into Dumbo might notice is that the ride is over almost as soon as it begins. Hell, it's shorter than a majority of episodes in Season 8 of Game of Thrones, and one of the shortest feature length films in the Disney catalog. One can hunker down on the couch to watch this classic, and not even need to get up for a bathroom break!

For the record, this runtime wasn't a sign of the times. RKO Pictures initially balked when Disney presented Dumbo to it, and requested the film either be cut down to short-form, scenes be added to make it longer, or it be allowed to release it as a B-movie. Disney refused all three options, as it was cutting serious corners at the time, and RKO eventually relented and allowed it to run as is.

Dumbo Basically Saved DisneyDisney had a great start with its animated films, but it only took a few failures to jeopardize the company's future. Pinocchio and Fantasia both failed at the box office, and European film distribution was impossible at the time due to World War II. Bottom line, Disney needed a hit, and it needed to spend as little money as possible to ensure its American audience showed up for the movie.

Dumbo did that, and in addition to doubling its modest budget of $950,000 (one-third of Pinocchio's budget), it managed to stand out in a good way. Its low-budget style resonated with audiences, and it has continued to do so throughout the years. The movie got some re-releases in theaters not long after the war, and two additional releases in the 70s. I guess non-verbal baby elephants can be a hit no matter the decade?

Dumbo Was Nearly Time's "Mammal Of The Year"Response to Dumbo was so positive in America, that Time Magazine wanted to feature the character on its cover. Dumbo was to be it's "Mammal of the Year" a title that was meant to be a play on its iconic "Man of the Year" award. Unfortunately, a bigger news item bumped the character off the cover, as Time thought it may be more prudent to cover the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Obviously, Time made the right call in covering an event that would change the world as we know it. Plus, Dumbo still got an article in that issue, although it wasn't the cover story that was originally planned. Still, how many other movies can say it took one of the biggest wars in world history to knock it out of the news cycle?

There Was Once A Dumbo II In DevelopmentThis fact isn't too hard to believe, as it seems like every Disney animated feature seems to get a sequel whether it's warranted or not (albeit it's been a history of almost exclusively home video releases). This was going to happen with Dumbo, as Disney had concocted a story that took place not long after the first film in which the elephant, Timothy Q. Mouse and other animals were separated from the circus.

Among other things, the sequel would've explained some details on Dumbo's father, Mr. Jumbo. A behind-the-scenes trailer for the sequel was packaged with the 2001 DVD release to coincide with the movie's 60th anniversary, but the move was ultimately cancelled by John Lasseter when he took control of the company. The movie will likely never see the light of day, but if the live-action adaptation is a hit, perhaps elements from Dumbo II could appear in a sequel to that?

It Was The First Disney Movie For Sterling HollowayDumbo was the first Disney voice acting role for actor Sterling Holloway, who audiences hear as the Stork that delivers baby Dumbo to Mrs. Jumbo. For those who don't recognize the name, Holloway would go on to do many voices for the House of Mouse, including another iconic animal in the Disney family. Holloway was the original voice of Winnie The Pooh, and voiced the character from its beginning all the way up until 1982.

Beyond Pooh, Disney lovers can also hear Sterling Holloway voice the adult flower in Bambi, The Cheshire Cat in Alice In Wonderland, and Kaa The Snake in The Jungle Book. Even if they didn't know the name, most probably knew that based on Sterling Holloway's distinctive voice, which is rather easy to pick out given the popularity of Pooh. Had he never gotten his role in Dumbo, who knows how the rest of his career would've went.

Timothy's Encouragement Of Dumbo Is Low Key Shade Towards Clark GableWhen one talks about the golden age of Hollywood, it's only a matter of time before Clark Gable comes up. He was the actor of the era, and still remains relevant today primarily thanks to his iconic role in Gone With The Wind. Despite that, audiences of today may overlook a statement made by Timothy E. Mouse that viewers at the time almost immediately attributed to the actor.

In one particular scene, which also appeared in the Dumbo trailer, Timothy informs Dumbo that his big ears aren't bad. In fact, he states "lots of people with big ears are famous," which audiences at the time took as a reference to Gable's large ears. It's a little mean spirited, but the movie came out during the prime of Gable's success, and there's no evidence he took particular offense to it. One could assume, frankly, he didn't give a damn.

"Look Out For Mister Stork" References A Famous FamilyHere's another reference that, while relevant for viewers in the 40s, may not ring a bell to anyone in 2019. "Look Out For Mister Stork" references the classic nursery rhyme The Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe, but also "those quintuplets" like any of us are supposed to know what that means today. As mentioned, folks back then knew the reference was made to the Dionne quintuplets of Ontario.

So, why did these five kids get a shout out in Dumbo? Well, they were famous because they were the first set of five kids to survive their infancy. It's impressive given the mortality rate of children at the time, and even more impressive when one reads about how the doctor who delivered them managed to keep them all alive. Suffice to say giving a newborn corn syrup with two drops of rum wouldn't have a doctor's recommendation these days.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Alpha Ticket

Alpha is a simple story. It only has two characters of note, and one of them isn't even human. It's about a prehistoric human boy and his attempt to make it home after being left for dead by his tribe. It's a mostly quiet and emotional journey. It may not come across as the sort of film to be given the 3D treatment, but that is exactly what has happened.

If you're curious if Alpha is your kind of movie, we have an official review that will likely answer all of those questions for you. If you are wondering if it's worth spending the extra money on the 3D experience, that's what we're here for now. Let's dive into Alpha's 3D presentation.

Normally, 3D movies are reserved for animated films with eye-popping colors or special effects action blockbusters. Alpha is not either of these things. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't fit the 3D mold. Because so much of the story of Alpha is told visually, with little to no dialogue, the environment itself is as important a character as the boy and the wolf. For that reason, it's important that the environment is given as much opportunity, and as much dimension, as possible.

Because the environment is essentially a character on screen, it's clear that a great deal of thought and care has been given to every shot that we see. While Alpha was not filmed in 3D, everything about the way the 3D was done here makes it feel like it was designed to be a 3D movie first. Some of the landscape shots feel like they could have been pulled from one of the 3D nature documentaries that used to be the mainstay of your local IMAX theater. Even the subtitles have been layered in as part of the 3D presentation, an utterly unnecessary move that shows how much care was taken with every inch of the presentation.

Most 3D movies these days seem to forgo the ability to set objects in front of the screen or throw them out at the audience, and while Alpha doesn't go for the easy gimmicks (nobody throws a spear at the viewer at any point), the movie never forgets that it has this ability and it makes sure to use it. Animals come so close to the front of the screen that you want to reach out and touch them, and you begin to wonder why you can't smell them. Everything is so close that the barrier of the screen between you and the story sometimes feels like it disappears altogether.

Creating the depth of an image beyond the window is where most 3D movies spend their time these days, but Alpha takes things a step further and perfects it. You really feel like you could walk into the screen and into the background of virtually any image on the screen. Landscapes go as far back as the horizon. The prehistoric world is mostly empty, meaning that there's little obstructing the view between you and as far back as you can look. It's majestic.

Brightness is always tricky as it largely depends on individual projector performance, but I had no particular issues with brightness during Alpha. The necessity of the story to take place largely at night, with no on-screen light source beyond a campfire, forces the movie itself to have a lot of fairly dark scenes, and while the cinematography keeps these scenes from becoming so dark you can't follow the action, the natural screen effect of 3D glasses does dim things slightly. It's not a detriment to the experience in any real way, but it's certainly there.

The glasses off test can seem a little silly, as it only really matters how the movie looks with your 3D glasses on, but it can give you an idea of just how much is going on with 3D and how many layers of information are sitting on top of each other. Alpha is essentially unwatchable without glasses as so many layers are blurring together that you can't really see anything. Even simple close-up shots that don't need depth have been clearly given the full 3D treatment. As mentioned, even the subtitles are layered into the experience, to the point where you can't read them with your glasses off.

While a great deal is done with 3D effects from beginning to end in this film, there's nothing that is likely to cause you any motion-sickness issues. The vast majority of the movie is really just two characters moving through the 3D space. The 3D is designed to let you enjoy the view, not be wowed by it as a spectacle. What action there is is handled with the same care as the rest of the 3D presentation, so it shouldn't cause you problems.

Alpha may not be a perfect 3D experience, but it's about as close to one as I've ever seen. It really is a visually stunning experience and the 3D only improves that by giving it more room to exist. Alpha is a small movie in many ways, and likely has modest expectations when it comes to box office response, but the film has gone big on 3D to make sure it delivers the best possible experience. If you're going to see Alpha at all, you should see it in 3D.

I'm not sure what other female heroes could shoulder a series (I see Ms Marvel as working better as a series than a movie) though I've long said that the Avengers should stand slightly apart from the other films in the franchise rather than being almost interchangeable for a Captain America/ Iron Man movie.
