Jamie Dornan Will Play A Journalist In Both Of His Fifty Shades Follow-Ups

Say what you will about the Fifty Shades franchise, but its stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are continuing to rise to stardom and take on new fascinating roles much because of its past success. Johnson is creating buzz surrounding her two upcoming October releases, Bad Times at the El Royale and horror-remake Suspiria. Dornan is also sharing a busy release schedule with three films with his name coming out before the year's end. Two of which has the actor portraying the stories of two very different real-life journalists in A Private War and in the HBO TV movie, My Dinner With Herv. Why did Dornan make this shift from playing a shady, kinky billionaire you may ask? Here's what he said:

It was just total coincidence that I ended up playing two journalists in the same year. I guess you're just drawn by story and by script. They were so vastly different in their capacity as journalists.

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin, the former Christian Grey explained the difference between these two roles. Up first, My Dinner with Herv has Jamie Dornan playing a struggling journalist, Danny Tate, who forms a friendship with Fantasy Island actor Herv Villechaize (Peter Dinklage) shortly before the television star committed suicide in 1993. His other role in A Private War has Dornan portraying British photojournalist Paul Conroy, who photographed some of the most taunting war images in the middle east alongside badass journalist Marie Colvin, played by Rosamund Pike.

For A Private War, Jamie Dornan recounted meeting with Paul Conroy, who showed him some of images he photographed. They were so gruesome that newspapers felt they could not publish them and are permanently imprinted in Dornan's brain. While Dornan maintains that both the roles are polar opposites, he said he thinks someone has to be "a wee bit mad" to be a journalist of any kind. A madness that he also believes actors such as himself and other creatives must possess. Delving into the world of war journalism proved to be more taxing as the movie discusses the damage the line of work has on people. His co-star Rosamund Pike will be portraying journalist Marie Colvin, who wears an eyepatch in the film due to her close encounters with war and died in 2012 while covering the siege of Homs in Syria.

Jamie Dornan is also involved in the Robin Hood reboot starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx. Dornan will be playing Will Scarlet in the fun action flick, one of the iconic members of the Hood's Merry Men. The actor certainly has a lot of exciting upcoming roles to follow-up the Fifty Shades franchise. My Dinner with Herv airs on HBO on October 20 and A Private War and Robin Hood hit theaters on November 21.

How If Beale Street Could Talk Reminds Regina King Of A Classic TV Show

If you've seen If Beale Street Could Talk then you know that it's one of the most original love stories ever put on the big screen. The film focuses on Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne), a 19-year-old pregnant woman whose life long friend and now fianc, Fonny (Stephan James) has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. As we follow Tish and Fonny's love story, we also see the efforts of Tish and her family to prove Fonny's innocence as the young couple struggles to keep their love alive through near impossible circumstances.

While the movie is far from a comedy, it turns out that Oscar-winning star Regina King, who plays Tish's mom Sharon, actually feels that the strong family bonds exemplified by the Rivers family (which is also comprised of Colman Domingo as dad Joseph and Teyonah Parris and sister Ernestine) remind her of those of a popular sitcom family from a classic show. Here's what King had to say:

The Rivers family is a family that exists, but even now, in 2018 when this comes out, we don't get the opportunity to see that family; where the father is there and the mother is there, and the children. You know Good Times? It's like that. That was a [TV] family in the '70s. They were poor, but there was a lot of laughter in the home, music in the home. I always say the Rivers are very similar to the Evans family!

I have to say, as I was watching the special features on the Blu-Ray for If Beale Street Could Talk (which is out now), I was very surprised to find that Regina King could make any comparison between the Rivers family in this sad, yet hopeful and lyrical love story and the Evans family from Good Times, which ran from 1974 through 1980 on CBS. But, after seeing how King manages to make the connection I can certainly understand how she came to such a conclusion.

As King mentioned, the Rivers and Evans families both share an easy closeness and are capable of having lots of fun with each other. Both families also deal with poverty and the dire circumstances that can cause, especially when things go wrong, but each group is also completely dedicated to supporting its members and showering them with as much love as possible to help them get through all the trials that life throws at them.

As you might imagine, getting a cast together that feels like a real family can be difficult, and director Barry Jenkins, who spoke about If Beale Street Could Talk during the same featurette, explained how the cast became like a real family during shooting.

Filming it, it was really important in the casting process to cast these actors who could literally, legitimately, you know, become a family. So, casting Regina King and Colman Domingo and Teyonah Parris, like, if you were on set with us you would see they all kind of huddled around KiKi, because this is KiKi's first role. She was literally the baby of the family.

No wonder the positive feelings of love and never-ending support for one another, no matter the situation, came through so well in If Beale Street Could Talk. Why David Dastmalchian Cant Wait To Get Started Filming Dune

Nearly 55 years after its publication, Dune remains an acclaimed piece of sci-fi literature. David Lynch adapted Frank Herberts novel for the big screen back in 1984, now Denis Villeneuve is putting his own stamp on the property. Among the many people attached to this Dune reboot is Ant-Man star David Dastmalchian, who is playing the dangerous Mentat known as Piter De Vries and is confident that Villeneuve has the skill to deliver a Dune movie that a lot of people will enjoy.

I recently had the opportunity to talk with David Dastmalchian about his new movie All Creatures Here Below, and when the conversation turned to Dune, he mentioned that he was leaving soon to do more prep work and then begin shooting his scenes. The actor continued:

Im so grateful and excited to be a part of Denis vision. I think that he is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time and any time, and I believe what hes going to do here, its just going to take people to a whole other place. He brings so much. When you think about Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 specifically, because those are the two science fiction films that hes crafted, you see his gift for telling stories that are visually stunning, but that are also rooted in really complex ideas and really fascinating characters.

Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 definitely established Denis Villeneuves sci-fi cred, with both earning positive reception and numerous accolades. So even though it will be a while before we see any footage from Villeneuves version of Dune, one can imagine its in safe hands given his resume. Dune also marks David Dastmalchians third time working with Villeneuve, having previously appeared in Prisoners and Blade Runner 2049.

Of course, if youre performing in an adaption, it often helps if youre already familiar with the source material, Fortunately for David Dastmalchian, hed both read the Dune novel and watched the David Lynch movie, although he only relied on the former when preparing for his role in Denis Villeneuves Dune. Dastmalchian recalled:

Id read the book and Id seen the film. Im a very big David Lynch fan, so there was so much about the film that I had loved, but to be quite honest, I had not seen the film since probably college. It had been a long time since Id seen the film. Once I got cast in [Dune], I decided not to revisit the film. But I did go back and revisited the book because like I said, I love it. Ive only read the book once, but Ive gone back to it many times just to dip in and out and pull quotes. Its just a fun and very dense piece of philosophical writing Its so exciting the thought that this level of maturity and complexity in Herberts writing is going to be put on a giant screen by Denis Villeneuve. And the cast that hes put together, its so awesome.

Although David Lynchs Dune was met with numerous negative reviews when it was initially released and ended up being a commercial failure, its morphed into a cult classic over the years. Nevertheless, from whats been revealed thus far, Denis Villeneuves Dune is going to feel incredibly different from its theatrical predecessor, not the least of which is because the plan is to adapt the original novel across two movies rather than just one.

In terms of Dunes cast, David Dastmalchian is correct that the lineup that Denis Villeneuve has assembled is impressive. Hes joined by Timothe Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Chang Chen and Stephen Henderson.

As for what we can expect from David Dastmalchians version of Piter De Vries, who serves the main antagonist, Stellan Skarsgards Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the actor wasnt willing to delve into specifics, but hes hopeful that his interpretation and the rest of the Dune movie will strike the right chord with longtime fans of the book. As Dastmalchian put it:

The Piter De Vries that Im playing I hope will resonate with and reflect the Piter de Vries that people who loved the books associate with. I cant really discuss much about the script or the plot itself, but I can just tell you that that old phrase True to the spirit or honoring the spirit of, and to be quite honest I havent even seen the most recent version of the script, but in the way Denis has talked about the film and what Ive seen, its absolutely true to and in honor of everything that Frank put into the novel. And translating something from novel form to cinema form requires a lot of mastery as storytellers go, and I think theres no one better for that job than Denis. Hes just so fearless, man. He makes choices and then he goes into the places that we need right now as audiences.

Dastmalchian has played numerous villains over the years, so it will be interesting to see how his version of Piter looks and acts.

Just like the original story, Dune will take place in the far future, where Paul Atreides and his mother must flee for their lives after their family is betrayed by Baron Harkonnen, who seizes their the planet Arrakis from them, which is the only source of spice, the most valued substance in the universe. With the help of Arrakis native Fremen, Paul and Jessica will fight to take back what is rightfully theirs.
