Shazam! Director Warns Fans About Rumors

When it comes to the big blockbuster films, fans will always be looking for the latest bit of news or gossip. This quest often leads to rumors that circulate about those movies, and when actual news is lacking, rumors can become the main things people talk about. A recent rumor regarding Shazam! got a lot of fans excited, and after being forced to shoot it down, director David F. Sandberg asked all fans to do their best to disregard all rumors, as they will so often disappoint. According to Sandberg...

I hate for people to be disappointed but I can't respond to every rumor. Safest bet is to not believe anything that hasn't been officially announced.

The specific rumor, in this case, was in regards to a new trailer for Shazam! that some believed would apparently be hitting the internet yesterday. David F. Sandberg responded on Twitter that this was not the case, but not fast enough to frustrate some fans who had become excited for the potential of new footage in the interim.

The rumor mill is always a dangerous place. The problem, of course, is that sometimes, not infrequently, the rumors that come out turn out to be entirely, or partially, true. This means that the next time a rumor comes out it can be given more weight than it truly deserves. People will believe it simply because it's a rumor. However, rumors are just as frequently complete B.S, and since it's rarely possible to know where any given rumor comes from, it's difficult to know which is which.

Since it's impossible to know which rumors could be true and which are crap, David F. Sandberg's recommendation is to just disbelieve everything until it's confirmed by an official source. That certainly has the benefit of making sure you don't believe the false rumors, and while you might end up not believing something that turns out to be true, that's far from a big deal. You don't really gain much by believing anything early if it ends up getting confirmed before release anyway, and if you make it all the way to the movie, you get to enjoy something you didn't know was going to happen, while everybody else saw it coming and had it spoiled.

As far as this particular rumor. It might have been spawned by the new Shazam! footage that aired on television over the weekend. Somebody with knowledge of that before it happened might have morphed it into a new trailer rumor over time. Alternatively, it's possible we could be getting a new trailer sometime soon. Studios frequently end up changing dates around for things like that, so it's possible there was a trailer release planned at one point that then got canceled.

There will probably be many more rumors about Shazam! between now and the film's release in April. Until then, we'll all have to decide how much we want to believe them.

The first Kingsman movie was so well received that it resulted in a sequel. The sequel was not as well received. Kingsman: The Golden Circle didn't do badly. It was still financially successful, although it didn't do as well as the first film. However, the sequel was critically lambasted compared to the first movie. Taron Egerton now says that the negative response hit him hard, mostly because he put his all into the film. According to Egerton...

I think in some respects it was because I just gave everything to it. And then it was so quickly torn down. I did feel a bit of a sting. I think in some respects it wasn't a quite as well put together film as the first one but it certainly wasn't a bad film.

Nobody likes to have their work criticized, but when you're an actor that's going to be part of the game. Both professional critics and fans are going to tell you what they think and when they like the end result it's going to feel good, and when they don't it's not.

Taron Egerton tells the Empire Film Podcast that the negative response to Kingsman: The Golden Circle hit him especially hard because he specifically worked hard to make sure that he did everything he could to make the movie work, and the response apparently made him feel like he was unsuccessful in that regard.

Often bad reviews are no big deal to actors. Sometimes it's because the actor was never particularly invested in a project, but clearly, that was not the case here.

While Egerton admits that The Golden Circle had some issues, that it maybe wasn't "put together" as well (which potentially covers a lot of ground) that he still overall feels it's not a bad film. While a lot of critics would disagree with that sentiment, I wouldn't. While I certainly think the sequel isn't up to the standards set by Kingsman: The Secret Service, it's still a perfectly fun little movie. If you enjoyed the original there is certainly fun to be had with it.

It will be interesting to see how the response to Kingsman: The Golden Circle impacts the franchise. Several different films are currently being plotted, some with spinoff characters and some set in different time periods, as well as a proper sequel starring Taron Egerton. Certainly, these other sequels will be looking for a warmer reception than the one the last movie got, which could mean some reevaluation before they make it to the screen to make sure the films are up to snuff.

Nobody sets out to make a bad movie, but sometimes things just don't come together right and a bad movie is the result. It doesn't mean Taron Egerton, or anybody else involved in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is bad at their jobs, just that sometimes things don't work out despite best intentions.

David Harbour Admits The Hellboy Reboot Had Major Problems

Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy finally returned to the big screen last month after over a decade away, only rather than being played by Ron Perlman again, Stranger Things David Harbour donned the red makeup and sawed-off horns for this reboot. While its predecessors were met with mostly positive critical reception, the new Hellboy movie earned a lot of negative reviews, and it also ended up being a box office bomb, making only $40 million worldwide off a $50 million budget.

It had been reported shortly before Hellboys release that there was behind-the-scenes drama during the production, and now David Harbour has admitted that the reboot had major problems, namely because it was dealing with the old too many cooks in the kitchen problem. In Harbours words:

We did our best, but there's so many voices that go into these things and they're not always going to work out. I did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately I'm not in control of a lot of those things.

Making a movie is a complicated endeavor that requires a lot of people doing various tasks, but when it comes to planning out how said movie is supposed to unfold, having too many people piping in on what should happen can definitely cause issues. This wouldnt be the first time a blockbuster, particularly a superhero movie, has dealt with such a problem, and going off David Harbours comment, this was the primary reason Hellboy failed to impress.

David Harbour didnt provide specific details how how these many voices dragged Hellboy down, but in the previous report about the troubled production, it was said director Neil Marshall frequently clashed with producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin, which boiled over when the producers replaced Marshalls cinematographer. No official reasoning was provided on this firing, but it was apparently a group decision and not, as Marshall supposedly believed, a message that he wasnt truly in charge.

Other issues that reportedly popped up during Hellboy included Lloyd Levin repeatedly interrupting Neil Marshall to give different directions, David Harbour walking off set numerous times after refusing to deliver extra takes Marshall wanted, multiple script re-writes and, perhaps most weirdly of all, disagreements over the design of a surreal tree. So yeah, even though Harbour didnt comment on the full scope of Hellboys problems, clearly this wasnt a smooth creative process.

That said, David Harbour also told Digital Spy and other outlets at MCM Comic-Con in London that he also thinks the movie was unfairly compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. As he sees it, due to what Marvel has been delivering, moviegoers have been expecting a certain flavor with their superhero movies, like chocolate. Harbour continued:

So everybody goes chocolate is delicious and these guys make the best chocolate. So as you judge the movies, it's like, 'Well it's not as chocolatey as this, this does not taste like chocolate at all'. And I sort of want a world where there's more flavors than just comparisons to chocolate. So in that way when Hellboy is viewed on the chocolate spectrum, it does very poorly. That being said, it also has major problems.

David Harbour then said that if one were to watch Hellboy as a rental or while on an airplane, theyd think Oh that was fun because it is a fun movie, but ultimately, the reboot was unfairly bludgeoned because it was compared to Marvels offerings. Whether you agree with that sentiment or not, one thing is certain: Hellboy will not go down in film history as a well-received superhero movie. It ranks at just 16% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a C grade on CinemaScore.

With critical reception like that, its extremely unlikely that Hellboy will get a sequel. Maybe its time to finally adapt the Mike Mignola-created property as a TV series? Regardless, this doesnt mark the end of David Harbours comic book movie journey, as hes lined up to appear in Black Widow. So even though Harbour felt that Hellboy shouldnt have been judged the same way a MCU movie would be, hell soon get to leave his mark on that very franchise.
