Netflix Is About To Make A Big Splash At The Toronto International Film Festival

It's surprising how quickly the standard can change. Earlier this year, programmers at the Cannes Film Festival found themselves in a mild kerfuffle because they opposed the invitation of Netflix movies to their esteemed festival. The argument, according to Cannes organizers, is that they preferred to support films that had aspirations of screening in a movie theater, and not at an audience member's home, on a television set hooked up to a streaming service (albeit a revolutionary streaming service that's quickly changing the rules of the game).

A few months later, as we begin the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, the rules in Canada are quite different. Netflix has a massive presence on the programming slate at TIFF, going so far as to have one of its own movies -- David Mackenzie's Outlaw King, starring Chris Pine and Aaron Taylor Johnson -- in the vaunted Opening Night slot. What a change from where the conversation was mere months ago, and a tangible reflection of how the power of Netflix continues to morph and shape the playing field when it comes to film festival programming, distribution and, most important, the quest for Oscar gold.

We started our 2018 TIFF marathon this year with yet another Netflix movie that packs a sizable amount of buzz, The Kindergarten Teacher, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal. Teacher played Sundance -- and when a movie premieres at an earlier fest, it tends to teceive a less-than-favorable Thursday morning screening slot, allowing TIFF to say, on paper, that it programmed the film. But it's a worthy TIFF entry, a tense and disturbing thriller about a failed poet who sees potential in one of her kindergarten students, but pushes a little too hard in pursuit of this little boy's possible greatness. Gyllenhaal is her usual riveting self in the title role, and the slow-burn drama gets impressively disturbing as she pushes the envelope on what's acceptable for a strange lady encouraging a gifted child. Netflix will bring The Kindergarten Teacher to its subscribers on October 12.

But Teacher also joins a litany of buzzy titles screening in Toronto that Netflix subscribers will be able to see before year's end, simply by waiting patiently for these features to show up on the streaming service. Most of these TIFF entries come from recognizable directors, including Paul Greengrass (the Bourne series, United 93) and Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Walking and Talking). The former returns to the docu-drama intensity of global terrorism for 22 July, a movie about Norwegian attacks that occurred on the date of the title in 2011. Meanwhile, The Land of Steady Habits takes a different avenue, following Ben Mendelsohn on a mid-life crisis as a Connecticut Yuppie who ditches his comfortable life (and wife, played by Edie Falco) in search of different meanings in his existence.

The crown jewel in Netflix's fall film festival programming, however, as to be Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, an intimate black-and-white drama that already has played to raves at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals. Roma won't play Toronto until Monday evening, but the pre-screening buzz overwhelmingly backs Netflix's intelligent decision to invest in trusted filmmakers (like Greengrass, Mackenzie, or Holofcener) who usually bring a strong voice and clear vision to their latest features. Cuaron's an Oscar-winning master craftsman, and Roma -- a tribute to his childhood that's supposed to be painted with exquisitely vivid detail -- would likely draw a crowd no matter where it was distributed. (There already are reports that Netflix will consider giving Roma a limited theatrical run, like the company did with Mudbound, so it can properly contend for the Academy Awards.) The fact that Roma carries the Netflix banner, though, is significant.

That's how quickly the standard for film festival programming changed. In the Spring, Cannes blocked the streaming giants from playing along. By Autumn, the "Big Three" of Venice, Telluride and Toronto had opened their collective arms to exciting features that happened to have Netflix backing. The rules are different now. They'll be different next year, as well, and the year after that. It's wise for fests like TIFF to evolve with the changing landscape, so that audiences continue to flock to Canada to see the best of what's to come, no matter where it's coming from.

Thanks To Merger, AT&T Is Getting Heckled About Justice League's Snyder Cut

Thanks To Merger, AT&T Is Getting Heckled About Justice League's Snyder Cut

It's been over half a year since Justice League was released in theaters, but still the battle rages on. After Joss Whedon came in to oversee reshoots and change the direction of the movie, some fans have been demanding to see the Snyder Cut, which would be the movie as envisioned by original director Zack Snyder. It's never been officially confirmed that the Snyder Cut even exists, but it's become an internet thing, and now that AT&T will officially own Warner Bros., fans are trying to get the corporation to spread some early goodwill by releasing the cut. Here's an example of the type of thing you can find about the Snyder Cut these days:

For a little extra elaboration, the Justice League that was released in theaters is certainly not the originally intended vision. Director Zack Snyder was working on the movie, but then backlash over Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice's tone caused the studio to rework the movie. Snyder also had to leave the film due to personal issues, as well, and Joss Whedon was recruited to handle extensive reshoots and rewrites. Footage from early trailers was nowhere to be seen in the final version, leading some to believe there must be a version of the edit that matches Snyder's original intent.

One fan on Twitter reached out to AT&T to try his luck at seeing if the new owner of Warner Bros. would be interested in releasing the Snyder Cut. Funnily enough, he did get a response, but probably not the one he was expecting. The Twitter user reached out to the AT&T customer service account, AT&T Cares, and the account wrote back,

Hey Chris, thanks for your feedback, We are always looking to expand. We are always here you.

This is more than likely an automated response that goes out to most people who contact the account. A different Twitter user reached out to the customer service account and reported getting a very similar response.

I don't think AT&T has quite updated its customer service since the merger was approved. It's unlikely that the corporation could help fans much with the Snyder Cut, anyway. If the cut did exist, it probably wouldn't be as a finished movie. While there may be a rough cut, that would still be missing visual effects, pickups, music, and a host of other elements that are added later on in the moviemaking process. There are fans who would still want to see that version anyway, but I'd have to guess Warner Bros. probably doesn't have much incentive to release it.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is still just a dream at the moment, but stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated with new information as soon as it becomes available. Keep track of all upcoming DC films with our DCEU guide.

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado's Director Doesn't Want To Make Sicario 3

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado's Director Doesn't Want To Make Sicario 3

The Sicario brand has become a full-fledged franchise with the debut of Stefano Sollima's Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the overall reaction to the intense sequel seems relatively positive. Sollima had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Denis Villeneuve, but he has pulled it off by delivering a satisfying sequel that feels fresh and new. With all of that said, Sollima apparently isn't interested in coming back for a third Sicario movie, as he feels that these movies need different directors to bring different styles to each installment. In a recent interview, the director explained:

Every movie in these series needs to be a standalone that stays in the same world. I'd love to watch another chapter of 'Sicario,' but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise.

The Sicario world is not a series like Captain America or The Dark Knight series, in which filmmakers like The Russo brothers or Christopher Nolan put their own signature spins on the characters. As Stefano Sollima explained in his recent interview with Variety, the series should feel different from movie to movie as new filmmakers come in to direct off of the scripts written by Taylor Sheridan -- who is continuing a hot streak off of other films like Hell or High Water and Wind River.

This is something that other members of the Sicario universe have already championed in the development of Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Specifically, Josh Brolin opened up to CinemaBlend in an interview ahead of the film's release and noted that he wanted Day of the Soldado to feel like a different beast when compared to the movie that preceded it. Bringing Stefano Sollima into the equation played a major role in achieving that goal, and it sounds like Sollima himself wants that to continue by handing off the series to another filmmaker in its next installment.

Besides, it's also worth noting that Stefano Sollima has other work that he needs to focus on at the moment. In addition to his recent work on Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the director is also in the process of developing a film adaptation of the Call of Duty video game series. Working on Day of the Soldado almost certainly helped prepare the Italian filmmaker for that kind of endeavor, but now he wants to see what someone else can do with the franchise that he helped to continue.

For now, make sure to take a look at CinemaBlend's comprehensive review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado and check it out in theaters for yourself! Yes, Captain Marvel's Producers Have Talked About Secret Invasion

Yes, Captain Marvel's Producers Have Talked About Secret Invasion

While the Skrulls have been a significant part of Marvel Comics history since the early 1960s, one of their most notable arcs in the canon played out within the last 15 years. An event orchestrated by Brian Michael Bendis, Secret Invasion saw alarm bells ring all around the Marvel Universe as fans found themselves questioning whether it was possible that their favorite heroes had been replaced by shapeshifting imposters.

Now with the Skrulls making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, there has been incessant speculation about the possibility of a Secret Invasion adaptation -- and while nothing is on the books right now, Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz has confirmed that behind-the-scenes conversations have been happening:

Yes we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn't go into this movie saying 'Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?' because Carol's is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always.

So get ready for paranoia, folks! Once the Skrulls enter the picture, basically every character transforms into a suspicious figure with questionable motives.

Jonathan Schwartz made these comments last year during a press day on the set of Captain Marvel -- fielding questions from reporters at the start of the day to offer baseline information about the upcoming blockbuster. During a discussion about the Skrulls, the producer was specifically asked about the potential of seeing Secret Invasion on the big screen someday, and while he most certainly didn't confirm that it's going to happen, he also definitely didn't take it off the table as a possibility.

Beginning in earnest during the spring of 2008, Secret Invasion basically jumpstarted when the Skrull homeworld was destroyed during the 2007 Marvel Cosmic event Annihilation. The shapeshifting aliens made a plan to colonize Earth as a replacement, and their method for takeover was replacing key individuals with Skrulls in disguise. Much like every other Marvel Comics arc that has made its way to the big screen, any adaptation wouldn't have to follow the source material beat-for-beat, but there is definitely a core concept in there that could make for excellent cinema.

What only makes this idea more enticing is the way in which the Skrulls are being introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it would have been just fine to see the aliens clash with Earth for the first time in a modern setting, Captain Marvel is making it so that the Skrulls are aware of our planet all the way back in the 1990s. This means that if a big screen Secret Invasion is hatched, there will exist the potential to tie things back into the canon as far as 30 years into the past -- which is pretty awesome for continuity nerds.

It's noteworthy that this is also exactly the right time for discussions about Secret Invasion to go down. Marvel Studios has spent the last 10 years orchestrating things to lead towards Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and it's not clear what they have planned for the future when it comes to crossover stories. An insane battle against the Skrulls might be the perfect choice.

It's entirely possible that the end of Captain Marvel will tease some kind of persistent Skrull presence on Earth that will inspire all kinds of paranoia -- but we won't know if that's true until we actually see the film. Thankfully, the wait for it is almost over, as the blockbuster is just a few months away, set to arrive on March 8th. Be on the lookout for a whole lot more of our coverage during that stretch, including more from our time on the set!
