Johnny Depp has been making the news a lot lately regarding the various legal proceedings surrounding the actor's money. He's been accused of spending a lot of money on some fairly outrageous items and experiences, and Depp now wants to set the record straight. In a candid interview, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor revealed a lot of details behind his personal finances, including the fact that he spent $5 million to fire the ashes of writer Hunter S. Various numbers had been bandied about regarding what it cost for Depp to blast the ashes of his friend "into the fucking sky." Apparently, according to the explanation in Rolling Stone, Johnny Depp decided he wanted the arc of the ashes to be higher than the Statue of Liberty, and adding this stipulation increased the cost of the stunt. The interviewer isn't entirely sure he buys the higher number, as $3 million is the number that has been generally accepted, including by those who are suing him over financial issues, but Depp says it was $5 million.
Johnny Depp became friends with writer Hunter S. Thompson and played the man himself in the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
For what it's worth, this isn't the only place where Johnny Depp feels obligated to point out inaccuracies regarding his spending habits. He's also been accused at spending $30,000 a month on wine, and he wants everybody to know that number is wrong. It was actually a lot more than that.

Johnny Depp sued his former business managers earlier this year over what he claimed was a mismanagement of his money. The managers then countersued Depp over a loan they gave the actor which he never repaid. The revelations regarding how much Depp spent on wine and making cremated remains airborne all came out as evidence from the business managers that Depp's own free-spending ways, and not the company's mismanagement, were the reason for any of Depp's financial difficulties.
Of course, by virtue of the fact that Johnny Depp is making it clear that some of his expenditures cost significantly more than previously reported, the actor himself doesn't seem to have an issue with how much he's spending or what he's spending it on. To be fair, spending $5 million to fire ashes out of a cannon isn't necessarily a big deal when you get paid $20 million for a couple months work.
This certainly won't be the last we hear of Johnny Depp's financial situation. These various lawsuits are still on-going.
