How At Eternitys Gate Will Change Your Vision Of Vincent Van Gogh, According To Willem Dafoe

How At Eternitys Gate Will Change Your Vision Of Vincent Van Gogh, According To Willem Dafoe

When most people think about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, they don't exactly conjure positive images. Part of the legendary artist's legacy is the fact that his work was widely disregarded in his time, and after dying a poor man his paintings became recognized as some of the greatest art ever put to canvas. It's a part of the story recognized in Julian Schnabel's new Van Gogh biopic, At Eternity's Gate, but there's much more to the tale than the base trivia. As star Willem Dafoe points out, it's also eye-opening just how prolific the man was during the final years of his life:

In the period that we deal with he was so productive, it kind of shatters the idea of him as the poor tortured artist. Ears cutting off and all that thrown into the mix, but he was on fire. He was creating... I don't remember how many paintings - like a painting every day. And of course he had lots of challenges, but he was in touch with the thing that he wanted to do. He was awake and that's what we all aspire to do.

Willem Dafoe delivers one of the best performances of his career in At Eternity's Gate, and I had the opportunity to discuss the project with him earlier this month during the film's Los Angeles press junket. During the interview I noted the general perception of Vincent Van Gogh -- a simultaneously tragic and renowned figure in the annals of history -- and asked how the actor's perception of him changed after his performance. The big thing he accentuated was just how productive he was, not only churning out hundreds of pieces, but also physically painting them all with great speed.

Based on a script by Jean-Claude Carrire, Louise Kugelberg, and Julian Schnabel, At Eternity's Gate depicts the life of Vincent Van Gogh in the last few years of his life, from 1888 to 1890. It was at this time that he moved from living with his brother to the small city of Arles in the south of France. It was during this time that produced some of his most famous and beautiful works, including the Night Cafe, Bedroom in Arles, Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear, and The Starry Night. However, while he was doing the greatest work of his career it was a period that also saw him suffer tremendously due to his mental illness, and suffer multiple incarcerations in psychiatric hospitals.

At Eternity's Gate and Willem Dafoe's performance are vivid in their depiction of Vincent Van Gogh's serious psychological issues, but also beautifully celebrate the man's incredible contribution to the art world. Not only does the narrative witness the creation many of his most incredible paintings, but also brings them to life through remarkable set design and cinematography. It's a fantastic piece of work, and a tremendous tribute.

You can watch Willem Dafoe discuss his turn as Vincent Van Gogh and At Eternity's Gate's effect on his perspective on the man by clicking play on the video below!

Following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall, At Eternity's Gate -- co-starring Rupert Friend, Oscar Isaac, and Mads Mikkelsen - will be making its way to American audiences this weekend. Look for the movie hitting theaters in limited release on November 16th.

8 Biggest Snubs From The 2019 Oscar Nominations

8 Biggest Snubs From The 2019 Oscar Nominations

Going into this morning's Oscar nomination presentation, a lot of people probably thought they had a good idea what to expect. And for the most part, things went largely as expected. A Star is Born got nominations for acting and music. Roma had a very good morning, as did its director Alfonso Cuaron. However, a lot of names we expected to hear were surprisingly missing.

There are always a few surprise nominees, and that means there are always a few names left off the final ballots. However, this year the list of snubs feels even more shocking than recent years. Here are the deserving films and people that the Academy completely forgot this year.

Bradley Cooper - Best DirectorA Star is Born was expected to compete in numerous categories and it certainly will. It received acting nominations in three of four categories, nominations in sound mixing and cinematography, and one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Conspicuous by its absence, however, was a nomination for Bradley Cooper as Best Director. While this was Cooper's first directing gig, many fully expected him to get a nomination. Actors turning directors have frequently been rewarded by the Academy (Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson), but this year, that transformation didn't even warrant a nomination. Considering all the other places the movie was recognized, not recognizing the person who brought it all together seems odd.

Mary Poppins Returns - Best Actress/PictureWhile the Best Actress category is absolutely stacked with some deserving nominees and powerful performances, there were a couple of surprise nominations, and that meant that a couple of more expected names weren't going to make the cut. Emily Blunt not getting nominated for her performance in Mary Poppins Returns feels like a serious mistake was made somewhere along the line. Many felt that Mary Poppins Returns was a surprisingly strong follow-up to the original, and since that film won Julie Andrews an Oscar, many expected the sequel to at least get a nomination for Blunt. The film was also left off of the Best Picture slate. Blunt also missed out on A Quiet Place, in a year where some predicted she could get love for BOTH films.

Eighth GradeBo Burnham's Eighth Grade has a total of 237 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the number deemed negative is three. This movie was one of the most universally loved films of the year. It had one of the most powerful performances of the year from an actress who is all of 15-years-old. And yet, somehow, the movie was entirely shutout of the Oscar nominations. No acting nomination for Elsie Fisher. No directing or writing nomination for Burnham. Nothing in Best Picture. It seems like everybody loves this movie, except, somehow, all the people who nominate for the Oscars. It feels like the Academy just forgot this movie existed, which seems impossible to do for most of the people who have actually seen it.

If Beale Street Could Talk - Best Director/Cinematography/PictureIf Beale Street Could Talk had a solid morning today with three good nominations. The screenplay and score both received nominations, as did Regina King for Best Supporting Actress. However, that recognition put into sharp relief two places where Beale Street got snubbed. Barry Jenkins was nominated for his screenplay, but not for his skills as a director. In a move that was probably related, If Beale Street Could Talk was also left off the slate of Best Picture nominees. One other surprising snub was that the film wasn't nominated in the cinematography category, a place where it has received praise from many other corners during the awards season.

Won't You Be My Neighbor? - Documentary FeatureDocumentary feature isn't usually a category that a lot of people care about, and yet this year, if you were paying attention, it was likely because of one of the films that did not get nominated. Won't You Be My Neighbor?, the documentary about children's television host Fred Rogers, received universal acclaim and certainly seems to have been one of the more widely seen documentaries in recent memory. And yet, somehow, it did not get a nomination. While other films can make do with snubs in one category with nominations in another, Won't You Be My Neighbor? only had one shot, and Mr. Rogers got denied.

Crazy Rich AsiansCrazy Rich Asians felt like a watershed moment in a lot of ways. It was the first movie with an exclusively Asian cast in years. It was one of the best romantic comedies in recent memory, and to top it all off, it was successful at the box office. The film has received some awards consideration, and so it seemed likely that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences would recognize the film in some way. And yet, we sat through the entire presentation of all the nominees and didn't hear the title of this film once.

First Man - Best Supporting Actress/Score/PictureFirst Man hasn't received the universal love from audiences and critics that Damian Chazelle is used to receiving. However, the movie has done just as well during awards season. Justin Hurwitz won the Golden Globe for his score to the film, and yet the music did not receive a nomination today. Likewise, the performance of Claire Foy, which was regarded by many as the strongest of the film, went without any recognition. It felt like a Best Picture nomination was also in this movie's future, so not receiving it felt surprising. First Man did walk away with four technical awards.

First Reformed - Best ActorFirst Reformed has been something of an under the radar film, in large part because it was released back in May rather than waiting for the heated awards season of the fall. However, the film made a number of critics' top 10 lists for the year and a large part of the reason for that was Ethan Hawke's remarkable performance. Hawke has been nominated for Academy Awards before but has never won. His body of work is incredibly well regarded, and whether or not that's supposed to matter, we all know it does. The movie wasn't entirely forgotten, however, as it did receive a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Every Oscar year has surprise snubs. It doesn't make the performances of those who are overlooked any less impressive. In a few years, most people will likely forget who was even nominated anyway. Still, it's nice when great work gets recognized as such, and in these cases, some truly great work did not get the love it deserved.

Happy Death Day 2U's End Credits Hint At A Potential Third Movie

Happy Death Day 2U's End Credits Hint At A Potential Third Movie

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Happy Death Day 2U. If you have not yet seen the film, continue at your own risk.

Happy Death Day 2U is one of the most bonkers sequels you could ever expect out of a franchise that starts with a slasher killer vibe. Shifting most of its narrative to an 80s-style sci-fi comedy, Tree Gelbhorns new adventures involve some extra wrinkles that make solving this brand new time loop all the more difficult, and all the more amusing. But by time the story wraps up at the end of the film, theres plenty of room for a third entry to take place.

What makes this potential Happy Death Day threequel even more exciting is that its teased in an end credits stinger that opens the door wide open for a new and even more insane entry in the series. Should Universal and Blumhouse allow writer/director Christopher Landon the opportunity to follow-up, theres a brand new way for the series to play around with temporal physics, and a new character at the center of a true horror. Last call for spoiler adverse audiences to turn away, as were about to talk about how Happy Death Day 2U ends, and what it might mean for the franchise at large.

What Happens In The EndingAfter solving the murder at the center of the alternate dimension time loop - courtesy of a shift triggered by the science experiment that created this whole mess in the first place - Tree finds herself back home in the right reality. With Carter still being her boyfriend, and the science experiment from one dimension successfully sending her back, its a pretty happy ending. Of course, thats not where the story concludes.

During the end credits, we see the stereotypical convoy of black government vehicles storm Bayfield Universitys campus. An agent introduces himself to Tree and her friends, with a vague request to come along and get whisked away to somewhere unknown. This location is eventually revealed to be a DARPA lab, where the device that Ryan and his classmates have been working on for their thesis project (codename Sissy) has been relocated.

Apparently, not only does DARPA know that the Bayfield students have successfully triggered, navigated, and broken a time loop, but theyre interested in running some experiments in such a scenario. The only thing left to do is figure out who the test subject will be, as the government would like to send in a guinea pig of sorts to run their tests. Its at that moment that inspiration strikes Tree, as she knows exactly who should be used as the test subject.

This leads to the closing shot of Happy Death Day 2U, which sees Tree's sorority sister/not so nice person Danielle (Rachel Matthews) waking up in her bed and screaming. Sounds like someone has a case of the recursive Mondays

Why They Went With That EndingHappy Death Day 2U has a pretty hysterical ending, with a pretty nasty character finally getting some just deserts (and possibly an opportunity to become a better person). However, it's not just a one-off joke that we're seeing there, as writer/director Christopher Landon chose the events in that sequence very specifically - as was recently discovered by our own Eric Eisenberg.

During the Happy Death Day 2U press junket, he spoke with the writer/director, who explained the intent of that end credits tease a little further. He admitted that part of his goal was to take a jab at the superhero trend, which are movies made with way bigger budgets, but he also wanted to lay the groundwork for an idea that he wants to execute in a potential Happy Death Day 3. Said Landon,

I think part of what we did with the end credit sequence was, we thought it was just a fun way to nod and wink to the Marvel trend, you know? Because we're such a small movie, for me there was a certain irony in us even doing it. It's typically reserved for much bigger movies. And so to some degree it's kind of a wink and a nod and a laugh, but it also really is meant to key up a third movie, if we get to do it.

Post-credits scenes are far from a given in the world of small-budget horror movies, and there are surely many Happy Death Day 2U fans who didn't think to stick around for a coda sequence, but Christopher Landon wanted to go that extra mile. In addition to playing homage to Marvel Studios contribution to pop culture moviegoing, however, Landon has also planted a seed for an idea that could blossom into a third film. And we have just an idea of where it might go.

What The Ending SuggestsWith the government in control of Sissy, and Danielle planted in the new time loop, Happy Death Day 3 could see the bullying sorority sister becoming the new protagonist that audiences follow. Much like how Happy Death Day 2U starts off with Ryan being the focus, the second sequel could give us a new perspective of May 18ths events as they happen again, and again - albeit now from a fresh perspective. If Danielle thought she had it rough with the special needs charity project her sorority was working on, shes about to have a rude awakening.

Seeing as shes a relative newbie to the time loop lifestyle, and this franchise is centered around Jessica Rothes Tree, theres the potential for the Happy Death Day star to engage in yet another adventure in time, potentially with a whole new bit of genre exploration. Even better, should this third film be the one to close out a complete trilogy, wed potentially see Danielle not only undergo her own personality changing voyage of self-discovery, but also possibly Tree completing her journey as a sage guide helping end the loop.

Of course, theres also the possibility that Danielle doubles down on her villainous ways, creating a dark mirror of Trees Happy Death Day storyline and ultimately pitting her against her sorority sister in one final time breaking climax. All of this is pretty speculative, as we dont even know if Happy Death Day 2U will hit big enough to make this third film a thing. Well just have to wait and see.
