Captain Marvel Will Lead The MCU, Kevin Feige Says

The MCU is going to look different soon. The popular cinematic universe is in a transitionary period as several of the characters we've come to know prepare to take their bows in Avengers: Endgame. Once we enter Phase 4, new heroes will rise up to take the reins, and leading the pack will be Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige promised that Brie Larson has a very healthy future in the MCU to look forward to.

When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings. She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.

You might have heard about this already, but there's a movie called Captain Marvel in theaters right now soaking up all the money. The film features the long-awaited debut of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel into the MCU. All the way up to the premiere of the movie, Captain Marvel has been hyped up to be a big addition to the MCU, with Carol Danvers being one of the most powerful beings in the universe.

Danvers will be using that power to give Thanos a whoopin' in Avengers: Endgame, but there's much more to look forward to after. Marvel Studios has been setting up the next generation of heroes to take over for the old guard, and it sounds like Captain Marvel may be our new Iron Man.

In the Captain Marvel: The Official Movie Special (via Comic Book), Feige teased what was to come for Captain Marvel. It should come as little surprise to fans that we will be seeing a lot more of her as she steps into a leadership role in the MCU. It sounds like we can count on Carol being in the center of a lot of posters from here on out!

It's been strongly hinted that Endgame will leave us with an new roster of superheroes to take us through the next iteration of the MCU. Captain Marvel and Black Panther are already proving to be major successes and it's great to hear that we will be seeing more of Carol. The Captain Marvel movie is doing great right now and it's a solid set up for more adventures down the road.

The Unexpected Marvel Superhero Movie That Simon Pegg Wants To Bring To The MCU

Simon Pegg's career if full of roles in many different blockbusters and geekier film properties. From Mission: Impossible to Stark Trek to Star Wars to Ready Player One, Simon Pegg is everywhere. But one glaring gap in his resume is that he has never done a superhero film. But that doesn't mean he isn't interested. There's one Marvel character in particular, one who doesn't have a lot of people calling for his cinematic debut, that Simon Pegg would like to bring to the MCU: Captain Britain. The actor explained his desire to play Brian Braddock (or another character), saying:

I mean, Captain Britain was this Marvel superhero that I loved growing up, 'cause he was the British member of that community. I even have a Captain Britain mask when I was a kid, but I fear I would probably be slightly too old now, but if they do have... If a Captain Britain movie comes about, they're gonna need a British cast, so I'll be waiting.

It is totally understandable that Simon Pegg would want to play Captain Britain, given his nationality and attachment to the character. The superheroes and fictional characters we connect with as kids generally stay with us for the long haul. Although Brits are currently portraying American superheroes like Superman and Daredevil, it would certainly be appropriate for a character named Captain Britain to be portrayed by an actor like Simon Pegg.

As Simon Pegg notes in speaking with JoBlo, he might be too old for the role now. Given the long contracts on these superhero movies, studios do tend to shoot for younger actors, but you can never say never with Marvel. And even if he was too old to play Captain Britain, that doesn't mean that Simon Pegg couldn't be involved in bringing the character to life in the MCU. Simon Pegg is an accomplished writer, having been one of the writers on Star Trek: Beyond and Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, including The World's End. He certainly understands humor, which is a huge part of Marvel's secret. One could imagine he could bring something truly unique to the table with a Captain Britain film.

For those unfamiliar with the character and fear he may just be a British Captain America, that's not entirely the case. The hero, clad in the British Lion or a Union Jack Costume, is not a super soldier like Cap, but was actually a scholar named Brian Braddock. His powers are derived from magic he received from Merlyn, allowing him to fly and have all the usual powers like superhuman strength and speed. Captain Britain actually has ties to the X-Men and is the brother of Betsy Braddock (Psylocke) and the leader of the European X-Men/Avengers-esque group Excalibur.

A couple years back there seemed to be a possibility that Captain Britain could be getting his own TV show. While that never came to fruition, the beauty of the current MCU is that it is full of possibility. Captain Britain may seem like an obscure character that people won't get behind, but the once dorky Captain America is now the heart of the films and the hyper-weird Guardians of the Galaxy are fan favorites. With Phase 3 ending next year I imagine that the original Avengers will be either dying or having diminished roles moving forward. This would allow for second-tier characters to step up and other new characters to come in, so why not Captain Britain?

I would really love to see what Simon Pegg would do with a superhero movie, in front of or behind the camera so hopefully we'll see it before long. Tolkien Trailer Shows How The Lord Of The Rings Was Brought To The Page

The Lord of the Rings is one of the great works of fantasy literature, which in turn spawned one of the great works of modern cinema. However, while the books got three separate films, and then each an extended edition, the man who created Middle-earth is finally getting one of his own. Nicholas Hoult will play the title role in Tolkien and we now have our first look at the upcoming feature. Check it out.

At under a minute, this first trailer is barely more than a tease of what Tolkien has to offer, but it packs quite a bit into its 55 seconds of run time. The voice over promises us a story about journeys taken to prove ourselves, adventure, magic and fellowship. It sounds a lot like the Lord of the Rings, of course, as it seems that Tolkien will follow the early life of the author and focus on the way his own life influenced the work of epic fantasy he would create.

Based on the plot synopsis, the story will follow the orphaned author as he goes off to school and finds friendship and love, before those friends then go off to World War I, potentially tearing their "fellowship" apart.

We do get a combination of real world performance and an artistic element that looks more like The Lord of the Rings itself, seeming to indicate that the the film won't simply imply the connection between the man and the work but actually show how the two relate in some way.

After Tolkien's work has given us so much, it's nice to see a movie being made about the actual person who created The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Most people probably don't know all that much about him. Giving him one movie when his work has received six seems only fair.

Of course, this movie doesn't appear to be a complete biopic, instead focusing on only a small part of the life of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. While this would mean a lot of his story may be left out, it also means that some real time can be given to this part of the author's life and the characters in it.

One of the unfortunate problems with biopics is that they end up giving only a surface level look at the subject's life because there ends up being so much time and information to cover. Instead Tolkien is set to make a deeper dive into a shorter period of time.

Who knows, maybe J.R.R. Tolkien will get the Lord of the Rings treatment and get three movies to tell his complete story. It's unlikely, but a nice thought.

Tolkien will be in theater May 10.
